Food waste generates greenhouse gas emissions through two distinct mechanisms. First, all the energy, fertilizer, land use, and transportation that went into producing, processing, and distributing the wasted food are emitted for no nutritional benefit. Even with the best planning, some food waste is unavoidable — banana peels, coffee grounds, eggshells, and vegetable scraps. Composting these materials instead of landfilling them eliminates methane emissions and produces nutrient-rich soil amendment. Home composting can be done in a backyard bin, a worm bin (vermicomposting), or through municipal composting programs.
A household composting 100 kg of food scraps per year prevents approximately 0.25 metric tons of CO2e compared to landfilling. Municipal composting programs are even more effective, as commercial composting facilities can handle a wider range of materials including meat, dairy, and compostable plastics.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 aims to halve global food waste by 2030. Achieving this target would reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 1.8 billion metric tons of CO2e per year — equivalent to taking 390 million cars off the road. Several countries, including the UK, Denmark, and South Korea, have already achieved significant reductions through policy measures, public education, and food waste recycling programs.
